For most people, empty inkjet and laser printer cartridges have no value and do not seem recyclable. However, if we take required precautions, these cartridges may be remanufactured more than once.

Given our day-to-day habits, we ignore the impact of throwing away these cartridges. In fact, if we knew that each year we throw out thousands of cartridges, and that it takes a thousand years for each cartridge to decompose, we might make the effort of recycling them.

We estimate that over 400 million inkjet and laser printer cartridges will be thrown out this year and only 25% of them will be recycled. When we know that a laser cartridge has an average weight of 4 pounds, it’s not difficult to imagine the quantity of matter that we can recuperate from these cartridges.

Furthermore, the cartridges that we throw away contain plastic components; acrylic, metal as well as aluminum sheets and each are known to be non-biodegradable. Also, the cyanide that these same cartridges contain, pollute waters, the earth and is rejected into public waste dumps
